How Bay Windows affect your Custom Drapes

Custom drapes can be placed on nearly any window in Colorado Springs and they will look beautiful if professionally designed. For example, bay windows are less common in new homes, but where a west-facing window does a beautiful job of framing Pike’s Peak, special care must be taken to design the window treatments.

A bay window is defined as a window that protrudes out from the wall and creates a bay in the room. It creates visual interest on the outside of the building and a 180-degree view from the inside. Since the windows are the main feature of the bay, they leave limited wall space for the drapes and drapery hardware.

We saw the importance of this many years ago when a client wanted to add a valance to a bay window in her home. A valance hangs above a window, framing the top of it. We typically position the valance to minimize coverage of the window itself and allow as much light in as possible when the shades, blinds or drapes are open.

Bay windows, however, are usually close to the ceiling. The homeowner in this case did not want the valance to cover the window, leaving us with only a few inches to work with. We ordered the custom valance to the specifications she insisted upon, but something didn’t look right when it was installed.

The fabric didn’t hang right. Why? Because the short length didn’t have enough weight to make itself stable!

We were able to fix the valance without ordering a new one, but the story highlights the importance of having your custom drapes designed by a professional. Bay windows and other oddly shaped windows present challenges and they are too expensive to simply replace if the first design doesn’t work.

Your bay windows may take special care to treat, but we promise they will be beautiful.
